Wattpad Story Comment: "Paper Planes Back Home" by taratriestowrite

Title: Paper Planes Back Home

Writer’s Username: taratriestowrite

Description:

When Gianna wakes up on a cloud, she is disoriented yet fascinated. She thinks she’s only dreaming until she gets a storm of paper planes. “They’re thoughts of people who remember,” a man on another cloud tells her—each pleading her not to leave. The man tells her these planes are the key to get out of there, and while she thinks it’s hard to believe, she decides everything is worth trying if it meant finding her way back home.

My Thoughts:

Thank goodness, I was able to read this story before the author took it down from the site since this one was already published independently. The first thing that caught my attention about this story was the description or the story teaser. But I only placed it on my reading list first since I don’t have that much time to read. And then I saw the visual inspirations the author used for this story from her blogsite. Of course, this made me intrigued and fascinated at the same time to know the whole story.

This story—when I finally began reading it—really made me smile because of the imagery used. I mean, she gave simple paper planes a whole new meaning to the readers and not just for kids imagining that they were flying on some enchanted world using that. Of course, this one still has elements of dream-like fantasy in it since most of the scenes happened in the place which appeared to be a link or a dream-like place between life and death.

Should I rank the characters that I liked just like what I did in my #FilipinoFriday review for “Forget Me Not”? Well, the first on my list was Skylar. Second on the list is Gianna, followed by Anna on the third and Aaron on the last spot. It’s not that I hate Aaron or anything just because I placed him last. And it’s not a bad spot, okay? Besides, Skylar was the one that really got my interest from the start, that’s why. Hehe!

So the reason why I picked Aaron to be the last to fill the spot? No apparent reason, though. I could understand his initial frustration as to why Gianna couldn’t introduce him to her parents. Seriously, more often than not, Asian people follow a slightly (if not heavily) strict sets of traditions and rules than Westerners sometimes had a hard time understanding or even following. But for the sake of love, one would do everything to capture the heart of the one he loves and also those hearts that were important to the significant other. As the story progresses, I can see how Aaron truly loved Gianna as he never left her side even though she was initially engaged (Arranged marriage sucks!) and her parents practically threw him out of her life because of the accident that rendered her comatosed. He might be a guy who just keeps on chasing his dream despite getting bad results almost every time. But Gianna was there for him all the way. And it was what made him continue chasing after it.

Then there’s the nurse Anna who took care of both Skylar and Gianna (Skylar, mostly) while they were in their stasis period. Even though she doesn’t personally know Skylar, she could really sympathize with him and even went as far as helping him locate the woman he fell in love with and one of the reason why he still couldn’t leave his cloud. Well, she did find him—but not in the way she expected. Of course, there was the help she provided for Aaron and Gianna. At first, I thought she and Aaron would be the one to fall in love (with Aaron shifting his attention and feelings he had for Gianna to Anna). But I shipped her and Skylar since the beginning. Thank goodness, it happened. Haha! I really love this pair.

As for Gianna, I know she was the main lead. Most of the perceptives were written using her thoughts since it was her first time journey to head back home as she hangs between life and death—though it doesn’t really feel like that at all because of the cloud and everything. She was really a strong-willed person over all as I read the story and finally finished it. She was willing to defy her parents just to chase her own dream. She was there for Aaron one failure after another that he kept on getting. There was one point in the story, however, that I nearly shipped her and Skylar because of their bonding during their journey as they both tried to find their way back home—meaning, back to the living. But it faded as soon as I saw that she was really meant for Aaron and no one else.

And here comes Skylar, my love! Haha! I’m still sane here, don’t worry. I just want to refer to him that way. I don’t know, really. I really find him cool and somewhat a trying hard romantic. Weird reason, I know. But for him to actually remain loving one woman even as he was waiting for her messages (thoughts) to finally reach him and help his way back to the living, it was a really beautiful things. I felt bad for him at one point of the story, though. Especially when he found out about what happened to the woman he remained in love with. Until Anna came to his life even before he regained consciousness and practically helped him back to his feet again. Even as I read the story, I really visualized him as someone more good-looking than Aaron. And no, it has nothing to do with him being a soldier.

Seriously, though I admire their bravery, I can’t find myself liking them. Maybe because of family since my grandfather was a part of PMA before. Also, there’s my maternal uncle who was now a part of AFP or Marines (I think). They actually gave me a very different meaning of a man in military—one that made me decide not to fall in love with them. So I can only like soldiers in stories and TV shows. In real life? I’m not sure.
