Okay, so this my stop for the book tour! I was given the opportunity to post a review for Jay E. Tria’s second book of the “Playlist” series, “Songs To Get Over You”. Honestly speaking, I haven’t read the first book of the series. Of course, that made me sad since I really have a thing for Japanese men being the male lead in a story. I really like reading those kinds of stories—romance novels, to be exact. But it did spark my interest and hopefully someday, I might be able to read the first book if given the chance.
One phrase to describe Miki: he’s an ass. Seriously speaking! I really had the urge to punch him for being a total jerk. And I don’t normally react like this over the lead guy in a novel. But Miki is a different issue. Okay, I know he was clearly in the friendzone upon nursing his feelings for Jill. But even though Anna was already there beside him, it seemed that there was only one person he declared that he’d look at forever. At least, forever on his part. There were times that I really felt hopeless about his case. No kidding. But of course, I decided to give him a chance, knowing that the story would progressed and his affection for Jill would eventually vanish in time. He only needed to work his heart and mind out of the past in order to make that happen.
I’ve been listening to some Korean and Japanese ballads, as well, while reading this book. I don’t know, maybe trying to set the mood. I really liked the lyrics associated with each song in this book. It conveyed one’s desire to let it go and move on, albeit done slowly. One step at a time, as someone would say. But I guess it’ll be hard for me to understand Miki when it comes to writing songs. I was never a songwriter, though. But for some reason, he was really trying his best to move on from his “silent” heartbreak with Jill through those songs. It was easy to see through those lyrics. Do the lyrics here already have tunes associated to them? If there is, I hope I’d have a chance to hear it one day.
I’m not sure about a phrase for me to describe Anna at first, though. She was a dedicated person, for one thing. And she really liked Miki. That part was truly obvious. It was just sad that Miki seemed to have taken advantage of it or he was just oblivious to her affections for him. Even the most patient person could be driven to the edge once forced. That was what happened to Anna, which gave me even more reason to strangle Miki. Well, thankfully, he was able to realize his “grave” mistake before he completely lost it all for being a total jerk.
Affections aside, how was she able to handle numbers that way? Okay, I know I’m not a numbers person—which makes it the reason for me not to like Math. But it appeared that her world revolved around it. Or at least, her career revolved around it and she truly liked it. I liked the fact that she was able to plan her future ahead of her and she was able to do it and turn it to reality. I guess that was what made her a dedicated person for me, being a CPA and all.
This is the first time for me to read a work by Jay E. Tria. Besides Songs Of Our Breakup, one of her books that I really want to read was Blossoms Among Flowers. Probably because of the Japanese theme on it. Hehe! This is one of the works that truly made me realize a lot of things (though some were not exactly worth mentioning for now).
This is a little short compared to my other book reviews. But I hope I managed to state my point here. I mean, I think all I did was to rant how a jerk Miki is. But he can be lovable when he wants to. Just don’t let him get stuck loving one girl and I’d definitely end up strangling him. Hehe! Just kidding. I might add more once I manage to let my brain produce more thoughts about this novel. I know I still have them. I just need to calm my mind for a day or two to let it all out.
